The first compensation cheques for hundreds of thousands of people hit by power cuts caused by Storm Arwen have been posted out, a power firm has said. The storm on 26 November knocked out power for more than 240,000 customers in the North East and Cumbria.

Storm Arwen power cuts
Some of those who lost power due to Storm Arwen will have to wait at least two more days to be reconnected, electricity companies have said. About 30,000 households have spent five nights without power so far since gusts of nearly 100mph hit parts of the UK. The energy companies said they had reconnected about a million homes. Energy regulator Ofgem said it would examine the speed of energy companies' responses and the resilience of the UK power network in extreme weather.
